Let's get positive!

Your holiday rental can have a POSITIVE effect on the local community.

Here's how!

We've all seen the sensationalised headlines about Airbnb properties from party houses causing chaos to a negative impact on the community - but Airbnb properties have a lot to offer the local community if you do it right!

We've put together the top ways in which your holiday rental property can benefit your local community and how you as a host can make a positive impact with a little work.

1. Increased tourism: Having holiday rentals in a community can result in increased tourism, which means more money flowing into the local economy. This can help support local businesses such as restaurants, shops, and activities, which can in turn create more jobs and growth.  As a host you can inform your Airbnb guests of the local spots to eat and hang out.  Steer them away from the masses towards the small, local independent businesses.  Speak with these business owners and ask for any promotional material or offers they can share with you to pass on to your Airbnb guests.

2. Preservation of historic buildings: Holiday rentals often involve converting historic buildings into accommodation. This can help preserve important heritage sites that might otherwise fall into disrepair if not for the income generated from rentals.  If your rental is i an historic building ensure your guests have a guide book with information about the building and suggest other buildings of interest in the area.  Promote your local National Trust sites and English Heritage sites.

3. Promoting cultural exchange: When tourists stay in local communities, they are exposed to new cultures and different ways of life. This can encourage visitors to appreciate and respect different cultures, which can lead to greater understanding and acceptance.

4. Supporting local businesses: Many holiday rental properties will partner with local businesses to provide experiences to their guests. This can include guided tours, cooking classes, or even locally sourced products. This helps to support the local economy and promote sustainable tourism.  Check out what Experiences Airbnb has to offer in the area and partner up with some of these small businesses.  It's always a good idea to road test anything you're going to recommend to your guests so that your guests trust your judgement.

5. Opportunity for homeowners: Holiday rentals can be a way for homeowners to earn an extra income. This can be especially important in areas where the economy might not be as strong. By renting out a property, homeowners can help supplement their income while also supporting local businesses.

Of course, there are also some concerns related to holiday rentals, like their impact on the availability of long-term housing for locals. It's important for local communities to carefully consider the impact of holiday rentals and create regulations that balance the needs of homeowners and visitors with those of the community.
